Calculate snow loads according to ÖNORM B 1991-1-3 (Austria)

In Austria, the characteristic snow load is calculated according to ÖNORM B 1991-1-3 from the snow load zone and the altitude of the site. Due to the Alpine topography, values range from below 1 kN/m² in the east to several kN/m² at high altitudes.

LoCaStatik determines zone and altitude from the address and calculates the snow loads for all common roof shapes and special situations.

What ÖNORM B 1991-1-3 regulates

Snow zones

ÖNORM B 1991-1-3 divides Austria into snow load zones. The ground snow load results from the zone value and the altitude, with the altitude entering quadratically.

Alpine locations

Snow loads increase sharply with altitude. The formula of the standard applies up to a specified altitude; above that, site-specific provisions are required.

Site data

The snow load zone is determined precisely from the address, as is the altitude. Both values are shown in the location tool and in the report.

Shape coefficients

For flat, monopitch, duopitch, vaulted and valley roofs, roof level differences, drifting at walls, trough situations and low eaves.

How it works with LoCaStatik

  1. Enter address Select the site by address. Zone, basic values and altitude are determined automatically.
  2. Select structural element Select the roof shape or structural element and enter the geometry. The project's standard determines the coefficients.
  3. Download report Export the results with all intermediate steps and references to the standard as a PDF for the structural analysis.

Frequently asked questions

Which snow load zone does my municipality have?

LoCaStatik determines the zone precisely via the address and shows it together with the altitude in the location tool and in the report.

How high is the snow load in Alpine locations?

It increases quadratically with altitude. At high altitudes, values of several kN/m² result. The calculation in LoCaStatik follows the formula of ÖNORM B 1991-1-3 within the permitted altitude range.

Which roof situations does LoCaStatik cover?

In addition to the standard roof shapes, also roof level differences, drifting at walls, trough situations, valley roofs and low eaves – each as a separate module with report.
