Calculate wind loads according to DIN EN 1991-1-4 (Germany)

In Germany, wind loads are determined according to DIN EN 1991-1-4 with the National Annex DIN EN 1991-1-4/NA. The basis is the wind zone of the site, the terrain category and the building geometry.

LoCaStatik determines the wind zone from the address and calculates the peak velocity pressure and the wind pressure on walls, roofs and structural elements – in compliance with the standard and documented in a traceable report.

What DIN EN 1991-1-4 regulates

Four wind zones

Germany is divided into wind zones 1 to 4, with basic wind velocities from 22.5 m/s (zone 1) to 30.0 m/s (zone 4) and basic velocity pressures from 0.32 to 0.56 kN/m².

Terrain categories and mixed profiles

The National Annex distinguishes between inland, coastal areas and the islands of the North Sea and Baltic Sea. This yields the peak velocity pressure as a function of building height.

Simplified approach

For buildings up to 25 m in height, the National Annex permits simplified, height-dependent velocity pressures.

Aerodynamic coefficients

External pressure coefficients for walls, flat, monopitch, duopitch, hipped and vaulted roofs as well as force coefficients for free-standing walls, signboards and lattice structures.

Dynamic effects

The structural factor cscd accounts for gust effects and resonance in slender or tall structures.

How it works with LoCaStatik

  1. Enter address Select the site by address. Zone, basic values and altitude are determined automatically.
  2. Select structural element Select the roof shape or structural element and enter the geometry. The project's standard determines the coefficients.
  3. Download report Export the results with all intermediate steps and references to the standard as a PDF for the structural analysis.

Frequently asked questions

Which wind zone applies at my site?

The wind zone map of the National Annex assigns every municipality to one of the four wind zones. In LoCaStatik you enter the address, the wind zone is determined automatically and documented in the report.

Which edition of the standard does LoCaStatik use for Germany?

DIN EN 1991-1-4 in conjunction with the National Annex DIN EN 1991-1-4/NA. The edition used is stated in every printed report.

Can I use the wind load calculation as a load summary?

The report contains all input values, intermediate steps and formulas with references to the standard and serves as a traceable load summary for structural analysis and checking.
